Module 6: Reinforcement Activity
Real-Time Feedback
Real-time feedback is the key to enhancing your learning experience. It offers constructive criticism and valuable suggestions during learning, ensuring immediate correction. It further provides “a better idea of student understanding and helps students develop more of their own skills and mastery” (McClelland, 2017).
The advantages of real-time feedback in collaborative assessment include personalized learning, the development of self-regulation skills, and the strengthening of student-teacher relationships. Students’ abilities and learning styles should always be considered, so including assessments where teachers can provide real-time feedback will ensure that all students understand the materials and those who aren’t showing content retention can receive support. Teachers can also reassess their teaching to ensure all students understand the content, which may result in them adjusting the amount of content presented during class time. By providing feedback, students can identify areas they need to improve and provide the skills to review their assignments before turning them in, ensuring they’re completing assignments to the best of their abilities. Feedback can help build student-teacher relationships by acknowledging their hard work and providing constructive criticism that will promote critical thinking skills for future assignments to enhance their skills and work. By building these relationships, students will feel comfortable asking their teacher for help or suggestions on their assignments.
Some strategies for giving real-time feedback include concentrating on the behavior, being specific, and being timely. When concentrating on the behavior, you want to state the behavior, describe your feelings about it, and then end with your expectations or wants. Be specific by illustrating your comments rather than using general comments. Lastly, be timely when providing feedback, as taking too long loses its impact.
Some strategies for receiving real-time feedback include being aware of your responses, being open, and reflecting and deciding what to do. When receiving feedback, it’s important to be aware of your responses by acknowledging your body language and tone of voice. Being open is crucial when receiving feedback and involves accepting new ideas and opinions. Reflecting and deciding what to do with given feedback is ultimately your choice. When receiving feedback, it’s helpful to “assess the value of the feedback, the consequences of using it or ignoring it, and then decide what to do because of it” (Receiving and Giving Effective Feedback | Centre for Teaching Excellence, n.d.).
